DOE will provide $11 million in SSL funds to support LEDs and OLEDs

The US Department of Energy (DOE) will provide the latest funding to the fourth round of SSL manufacturing initiatives to support the US in the development of LED and OLED manufacturing. DOE will provide a $11 million Solid State Lighting (SSL) solution fund to support existing manufacturing R&D efforts. If the project is successful, it will help achieve the goals of the program – making the US a global leader in SSL manufacturing.

With this funding (DE-FOA-0000792), the US Department of Energy hopes that SSL manufacturing R&D projects can significantly reduce costs by improving production equipment, processes or monitoring technologies. The US Department of Energy says that these funding activities can “accelerate the creation of a US-led market that provides efficient light sources that are more energy efficient, less costly, and less environmentally friendly than traditional light sources.”

The US Department of Energy will select six projects in the areas of LED luminaire/module manufacturing, LED test and inspection equipment, OLED deposition equipment and OLED material production.

It is understood that the deadline for application for the event is February 21, 2013.
